Basiru: Wike Has No Right to Interfere in APC Affairs in Rivers

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has said that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, lacks the right to interfere in the affairs of the APC in Rivers State.

Basiru’s comments followed recent public statements and political manoeuvres allegedly linked to the former Rivers State governor, in which he was reported to have made remarks concerning the leadership, internal structure, and future political direction of the APC in Rivers State.

The developments, which sparked reactions within the party, were seen by the APC leadership as a direct attempt by a non-member to influence internal party affairs and realign political forces ahead of future elections in the state.

Basiru stated that Wike, who is not a member of the APC, therefore lacks the “locus to dabble into the affairs” of the ruling party.

He stressed that the APC has duly recognised structures and leadership in Rivers State, which alone are empowered by the party’s constitution to take decisions relating to its organisation, membership, and political activities.

“APC is a disciplined party governed by rules and constitutional provisions. Those who are not members of the party have no legal, moral, or political basis to interfere in its internal processes,” Basiru said.

The APC scribe added that the national leadership was compelled to clarify its position following what he described as sustained public commentary and actions capable of creating confusion among party members and supporters in Rivers State.

He maintained that the APC remains focused on strengthening its internal cohesion and expanding its political base in Rivers State, warning that the party would not tolerate external interference in its affairs.

Basiru urged party members in the state to remain steadfast and united, assuring them that the national leadership would take all necessary steps to protect the integrity of the party and enforce discipline in line with its constitution.
