Aspirants across the states of the federation are reportedly holding back from purchasing nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid growing concerns over alleged imposition of candidates by state governors.
The development has forced the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to extend the deadline for the sale and submission of forms, in a bid to encourage wider participation and calm rising tensions within party ranks.
Investigations revealed that many prospective candidates, particularly those seeking elective offices at the state and federal levels, are wary of what they describe as “governor-controlled structures” that could ultimately determine the outcome of the primaries regardless of grassroots support.
Some party members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed fears that investing heavily in nomination forms could be futile if internal party democracy is not guaranteed.
“There is a perception that the process is already skewed in favour of preferred candidates. Many of us are watching closely before committing resources,” one aspirant said.
Another source noted that the high cost of nomination forms, combined with uncertainty about the transparency of the selection process, has discouraged participation, especially among younger aspirants and newcomers.
In response, the APC’s NWC announced an extension of the deadline, stating that the decision was taken to give all interested members ample time to obtain and submit their forms.
A statement from the party leadership emphasized its commitment to internal democracy and assured members that the primaries would be conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.
Party officials also urged aspirants not to be discouraged by rumours, insisting that the APC remains committed to providing a level playing field for all contestants.
Political analysts warn that if not properly managed, the situation could deepen internal divisions within the party and affect its electoral prospects, particularly in states where aggrieved aspirants may defect or withdraw support.
As the new deadline approaches, attention is now focused on whether the extension will boost participation or further expose cracks within the ruling party.
