Recent public commentary by Inibehe Effiong alleging that Umo Eno purchased a pair of shoes worth two million naira has sparked unnecessary controversy and concern among well-meaning citizens.
While it is the right of every citizen to hold leaders accountable, it is equally important that such criticism is grounded in verifiable facts rather than speculation or exaggeration. Unsubstantiated claims, particularly when amplified in the public space, do little to promote accountability and instead risk misleading the public.
Governor Umo Eno did not attain his current position without a proven track record. Before assuming office, he was widely recognized as a successful entrepreneur, with notable investments in the hospitality sector. His achievements in the private sector are well documented, and it is therefore misleading to suggest that his personal lifestyle is solely a product of public office.
It is important to stress that public office holders are entitled to personal lives and resources, provided they are lawfully acquired. Allegations regarding personal spending must be backed by credible evidence before being presented as facts. Anything short of this undermines the integrity of public discourse.
At a time when Akwa Ibom State faces critical developmental needs—ranging from job creation to infrastructure and social services—it is imperative that public conversations remain focused on substantive issues that directly affect the welfare of the people. Sensational claims about personal items only serve as distractions from these priorities.
Furthermore, individuals in positions of influence, particularly respected professionals, have a responsibility to ensure that their statements reflect accuracy, fairness, and restraint. Public trust is strengthened when discourse is constructive and fact-based, not when it is driven by assumptions.
Supporting the governor in this instance is not an act of sycophancy, but a call for fairness, truth, and responsible engagement. Criticism must always be constructive and evidence-based if it is to contribute meaningfully to democratic governance.
Akwa Ibom people deserve a political environment defined by integrity, respect, and thoughtful dialogue. Let us collectively reject the spread of unverified claims and instead promote conversations that advance unity and development.
