The National Hospital Abuja (NHA) has unveiled it’s strategic plans for the future aimed to bring the  Hospital to its rightful position as the apex (Quaternary) hospital in Nigeria.

The  Chief Medical Director/CEO of NHA, Professor Muhammad Raji Mahmud, made this known while briefing journalists as the hospital marks its 25th anniversary on September 2, 2024.

Professor Mahmud said the future plans include completing ongoing projects, digitalizing systems, and establishing new facilities like a Neurosciences Institute and Presidential/VIP Wing.

“The aim is to bring the National Hospital to its rightful position as the apex (Quaternary) hospital in Nigeria, as it is in its mandate,” he added .

Highligting  its remarkable achievements, Mahmud said, the  hospital has achieved a lot in 25 years and is poised to achieve more if given the right incentives and enabling environment.

Established in 1999 as a referral center of excellence, the hospital has grown to become a leading healthcare provider in Nigeria and West Africa.

He said: “The hospital’s journey began on September 1, 1999, with 200 beds and specialized services like Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Theatre Suites, and Cancer Treatment Machines. Today, it boasts 450 beds and additional clinical services, including Psychiatry, Nuclear Physics, Family Medicine, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Unit, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Cardiothoracic Surgery.

“NHA has also established a National Trauma Centre, Radiotherapy Centre, and Noma Treatment Centre, and has achieved accreditation in most clinical departments. Its residency training programs have produced many consultants, and it has collaborated with international institutions on research projects.

“Despite its achievements, the hospital faces challenges like funding constraints, brain drain, and inadequate manpower.

“The anniversary celebration will continue with activities scheduled later in the year, including a Thanksgiving Service and Juma’at Prayers. The hospital aims to bring its services to world standards, attract clients from West Africa, and curb brain drain.”
