In the spirit of national healing and reconciliation, Chief Edet Isong (Okete Okete Oro) has humbly appealed to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to grant a state pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Chief Isong acknowledged that “Nnamdi Kanu made several unguarded statements against our great nation — words that were deeply hurtful and divisive, even referring to Nigeria as a ‘zoo.’ Those utterances were unfortunate and regrettable. However, as a people striving for unity and peace, we must also embrace the higher virtue of forgiveness.”
He praised President Tinubu for recently granting state pardons to distinguished Nigerians, including General Mammal Vatsa and the Ogoni 9, describing it as a reflection of the President’s large heart, commitment to justice, and willingness to offer deserving citizens a second chance.
“In the same spirit,” Chief Isong said, “I appeal that you extend this hand of mercy to Nnamdi Kanu, as a demonstration of your government’s commitment to reconciliation, peace, and national cohesion. His release will go a long way in calming nerves, rebuilding trust, and fostering unity among our people — especially in the South-East region, which has endured hardship due to recurring sit-at-home orders every Monday.”
Chief Isong urged those calling for protests demanding Kanu’s release to desist, emphasizing that dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation are the paths toward lasting peace.
He also suggested that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should sign an undertaking to uphold good character and abide by the laws of the land upon his release.
“Your Excellency, history will remember you not only for your political reforms but also for your magnanimity and courage to forgive. By granting freedom to Nnamdi Kanu, you will be writing a new chapter of hope and reconciliation in Nigeria’s journey toward lasting peace,” Chief Isong concluded.
He prayed: “May the good Lord bless our President, our citizens, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria is bigger than any individual. Our collective unity, peace, and national cohesion must always take precedence over personal grievances or past divisions.”
