A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Chief Edet Isong, has issued a strong call for political restraint and unity, urging the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to refrain from actions he says are destabilizing Rivers State.
Speaking from Ward 2 in Urue Offong/Oruko Local Government Area, Isong appealed directly to Wike to “leave Governor Siminalayi Fubara alone,” emphasizing that the governor has faced considerable political turbulence and should be allowed to focus on governance without undue interference.
The APC stalwart noted that Governor Fubara, who emerged from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has already made significant political sacrifices. Subjecting him to continued pressure, Isong argued, risks deepening divisions not only within Rivers State but across party lines.
Isong further accused Wike of fueling internal crises within the PDP while allegedly attempting to extend his influence into APC affairs in Rivers State. He warned that such actions could undermine party stability at a critical time when unity is essential ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“APC remains a respected and peaceful party,” Isong stated firmly. “Our members are committed to cohesion, discipline, and electoral success. External interference must not be allowed to weaken our structure.”
Projecting confidence in the party’s future, Isong expressed optimism that APC governors nationwide would secure resounding victories in 2027, stressing that Governor Fubara should not be politically sidelined in the process.
In a pointed remark directed at the FCT Minister, Isong questioned the propriety of influencing a party one does not belong to. “You cannot remain in PDP and seek to determine the direction of APC. Political loyalty demands clarity—you can only belong to one party at a time,” he said.
He also invoked the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging all political actors to align with the broader goal of national stability. “If you truly support Mr. President, then let peace reign in Rivers State,” he added.
Isong concluded with a broader appeal to political leaders across the country to prioritize peace, mutual respect, and the strengthening of democratic institutions as Nigeria approaches another pivotal electoral cycle.
