Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday described himself as a “freelance politician” amid the lingering leadership crisis and legal uncertainty within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor made the remark shortly after a closed-door meeting with former presidential candidate Peter Obi at Ramat House in Bauchi. The meeting is widely viewed as part of ongoing political consultations and strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mohammed suggested that the current instability within major opposition parties has necessitated a more flexible political posture among key actors.
“Neither PDP nor ADC is standing alone. I am a freelance politician now, and his party is also in limbo. We are looking up to the judiciary. But certainly, we are all in the opposition,” he said.
He added that discussions between both leaders centered on possible political realignments and cooperation among opposition forces, though he declined to disclose specific details.
“That is why I said it is a political discussion, and I will not let you know what we discussed in terms of the Is and Ts that we have crossed. But certainly, it is about realignment, alignment, and cooperation so that we can have a platform. We cannot go without a platform,” Mohammed stated.
The meeting underscores growing efforts among opposition figures to explore alliances and consolidate platforms amid internal disputes and legal battles affecting party structures. Political observers say such engagements could shape the configuration of opposition politics in the lead-up to the next general elections.
