The Former Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu has called on more women to vie for political positions in the country.
He added that women plays a great role in building the nation, and they should not be neglected in politics.
Dr Aliyu stated this during the election of new officials of the PDP Professional and Business Group meeting in Abuja.
According to him, there is need for more women to take part in political process as they usually come out in large numbers during election.
“I want all men to support women and make them bring out the best in them by encouraging them to be in active participants . From the legislative role, to executive , state, local government and all sectors of the economy “.
In the same vein, he noted that affirmative action should be practiced in all states of the federation.
“Am happy that there are many woman in this organization. We realize the great role that woman are playing. If they believe in you, nothing will change their mind.
I know that as professionals, there are rules and regulations that we must satisfy. So we should learn to do the right thing, and support each other”.
“Most of the times when women promise to vote for you nothing will change their mind. I don’t think small money should be able to change the mind of people. It is good for us to vote for credible people”.
The outgoing National Coordinator of PDP working group, Dr Salifu Arome also called on young professionals to work together in improving the political terrain in the country.
He disclosed that through the association young professionals are encouraged to play active role and act as support group to PDP.
“Prior to this time, youth has been relegated to the background, but this time around, we want our professionals to play active roles in politics. We have provided good alternatives that is why we identified leaders that are credible to lead the group ”
“I believe that I have laid a good foundation. I therefore shift the leadership to the next level of the group. I will support the new group, and ensure that they perform effectively well on the job. We want to give the mantle to the next set of leaders who are credible ”
While giving the Key note speech, the former House Committee on Banking and currency Chairman, Rt Hon John Onyereme said the influence of professionals is lacking in the political space.
He therfore challenged the incoming new leaders to give their best to the team members.
“The professionals constitue a great role in the Nigeria dream. They have been found wanting in times past, but now we want to make amends.
Initially the professional and career oriented people have faced several challenges. This is the time to make a meaningful impact in the affairs of our country.”
