Stakeholders from different strata of life has called for preventive measures to tackle terrorism financing and violent extremism in North Eastern part of Nigeria.
They stated this at an event organised by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International in Nigeria (TI-Nigeria), which was financed by GIABA-ECOWAS in Gombe state.
The participants in a press release signed by the Executive Director CISLAC, Auwal Ibrahim Musa, Gombe State Commandant NSCDC, Muhammed Bello Muazu, and others, called for enhanced collaboration between state and non-state actors to adopt a holistic approach to tackling terrorism and violent extremism in the North East.
The importance of moral education, community-based surveillance, and socio-economic empowerment of victims was underscored as vital strategies to break the cycle of radicalisation and foster sustainable peace.
The Stakeholders also called for regular advocacy and sensitisation on negative impact of terrorism on communities.
“Strengthening sensitisation and advocacy for restoration of social values, family re-orientation against terrorism, terrorism financing and violent extremism at community levels.
“Integrating the informal private sector (markets, motor parks etc.) including Persons Living with Disabilities through enhanced advocacy to sensitise and enlighten the community against the funding strategies deployed by terrorism financiers”, the group added.
The Stakeholders also called for improved remuneration and training for security personnel.
“Regular training will improve efficiency and prevent corruption. It will also improve
institutional Strengthening.
Strengthen civilian oversight and advocacy in the security sector will also ensure accountability and transparency”.
