The recently held induction ceremony of the RTO/VIO volunteers at the premises of the fact directorate of road traffic services (drts) further to mind why every Nigerian irrespective of class and religion needs to also contribute to traffic enforcement and control through volunteerism as it is everyone’s business. The history of volunteerism dates back to the first and second world wars when people were recruited to assist the various armies to fight against the enemies. There have been humanitarian volunteers like Doctors without borders, teachers without borders, journalists without borders, lawyers without borders and even government-backed volunteerism like the Nigerian Technical aid corps under the Foreign affairs Ministry that annually send professionals to weak African countries to assist based on technical aid cooperation. These initiatives have yielded positive results in reducing hardship in all facets. The Road Traffic and vehicle inspection volunteers known as VIO Mayors have demonstrated capability, wherewithal and preparedness to meet up traffic demand even though acting from outside. The task lies on us as beneficiaries of their services through our cooperation ranging from moral to financial support. In a society where volunteerism is discouraged through campaigns of calumny from bad eggs in our society simply because cos they see such devotion as an alien which must stop. Road traffic as a residual creation deserves our input to succeed. The Road Traffic and vehicle inspection volunteers have come to do the needful to put an end to traffic gridlock and jam-pack via the support of established agencies like the RTO/VIO. During the various presentations at the induction ceremony of new inductees which took place at the DRTS headquarters in Abuja on the 11 of June 2022, the director in charge of the FCT DRTS Dr. AbdulLateef Bello emphasised the need for Nigerians to embrace volunteerism through joining of noble teams like the vio mayors to make traffic management easier which could wipe out traffic violation and other offences committed by motorists. In another vein, the fct squadron leader and national coordinator of the RTO/VIO mayors, Dr Yusuf John Suberu implored the new inductees to put in their bests to achieve results so that at the end of the day, VIO mayors could be perceived as a people who came together to enhance traffic management in areas of traffic control and hazard tackling. Some distinguished Nigerians were crowned as honourary inductees amongst them are the Barcelona 92, Atlanta 96 Athlete who won gold for Nigeria, Amb. Christy Opara, Fct market women President, Felicia Sanni, MD of Abuja Market Management, MD of SY Engineering ltd,MD of ITV, AIT, SSA enforcement to FCT Minister and others. The essence of the honourary induction was to set a pace for recognition of people who have made the country proud to motivate others to embrace volunteerism. There is no way any motorist would see Christy Opara controlling traffic when the need arises without wanting to one day join. The Squadron leader and his team did a very marvellous Job by putting the event together. Representatives of the FRSC, Civil defence, Fire service and other agencies were present. The National Assembly was not also exempted as the chairman house committee on Area Council was there on the ground as an honourary inductee and also a guest of honour which means one day the house could raise a motion on traffic volunteerism. This is a clarion call on multi-national companies both oil and manufacturing to necessitate the adoption and endorsement of traffic mayors as brand ambassadors, such endorsements could go a long way to assist in eradicating traffic gridlocks. The transport Ministry at federal and states must also key in and support financially. Congratulations to the deputy director of operations of the fct drts Mr Dele Yaro over his support towards making this programme a success. The Chief Provost of drts Mr Sani Ibrahim whose regimented experience made the
Induction a success is not also left out as well as provost Charles who served as co mc,directing staff and protocol. Zonal commanders Dawa, Labaran,Musa,Oc villa obi,Madam Deborah and others are not also left out. Together we can make traffic flow.
