President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the planned expansion of the Dangote Refinery from its current capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million barrels per day.
The President, represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, made the pledge on Monday during the opening of the 19th edition of the OTL Africa Downstream Conference and Exhibition held in Lagos.
Tinubu described the refinery as a “game-changer” for Nigeria, West Africa, and the global energy market, noting that the expansion project underscores his administration’s commitment to achieving energy security and industrial growth.
According to him, the move will not only consolidate Nigeria’s march toward self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products, but also position the country as a regional hub for energy supply across Africa.
“The Dangote Refinery expansion represents a bold step in our national quest for energy independence, industrial development, and job creation,” the President stated.
“This administration remains fully committed to providing the enabling environment, policy support, and partnerships required for this transformative project to succeed.”
Tinubu emphasized that the refinery’s expansion aligns with the government’s broader objectives under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to leverage Nigeria’s abundant crude oil resources to drive economic diversification, create employment, and reduce import dependency.
In his remarks, Minister Lokpobiri commended the Dangote Group for its visionary leadership and continued investments in the downstream sector, describing the project as a model of private-sector participation in national development.
The Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, is the world’s largest single-train refinery and a key component of Nigeria’s strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency, improve foreign exchange earnings, and enhance the country’s refining capacity.
