Abuja — The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday formally declared three senatorial seats vacant following the deaths of serving lawmakers.

The affected constituencies are Enugu North Senatorial District, Nasarawa North Senatorial District, and Rivers South-East Senatorial District.

Announcing the development during plenary, Akpabio said the vacancies were in line with constitutional provisions and would pave the way for fresh elections to fill the positions.

“Due to the tragedies that have befallen the 10th Senate, vacancies have been created for midterm elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that we fill the seats left vacant by the demise of our colleagues,” he stated.

The Senate President expressed condolences over the loss of the lawmakers, describing their deaths as a significant blow to the upper legislative chamber.

With the declaration, INEC is expected to conduct by-elections in the affected senatorial districts in accordance with the law, to ensure continued representation of the constituencies in the National Assembly.

The timeline for the elections is yet to be announced.
