My attention has been drawn to a widely circulated social media publication titled “I Weep for Akwa Ibom,” authored by Barr. Inibehe Effiong, in which several concerns were raised regarding the state of Etinan Institute, alongside references to certain public office holders and stakeholders.
While it is not out of place for citizens to express concern about the condition of public institutions—particularly one as historically significant as Etinan Institute—it is important to emphasize that the medium and manner of such expressions matter greatly.
Social media platforms, especially Facebook, are not always the most appropriate or effective channels for addressing sensitive issues of public administration, institutional decay, or governance concerns. Issues of this magnitude require constructive engagement, direct communication, and responsible dialogue with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
It is worth noting that many of the individuals mentioned in the said publication are accessible and well-known. Established lines of communication exist, and meaningful change is more likely to be achieved through direct consultation, advocacy, and collaboration rather than public criticism that may risk misrepresentation or unnecessary embarrassment.
Public commentary, particularly from respected members of the legal profession, should be guided by a sense of responsibility, decorum, and commitment to constructive solutions. Resorting to sensationalism or public denunciation does little to advance the cause of development and may inadvertently undermine the collective image of the state.
Akwa Ibom State remains a land of promise, with a proud heritage and people committed to progress. While challenges may exist—as they do in every society—addressing them requires unity of purpose, respectful engagement, and strategic action.
I therefore urge Barr. Inibehe Effiong to reconsider the approach adopted in addressing such matters and to utilize more appropriate and effective channels to engage relevant authorities. This will not only yield better results but also preserve the dignity of all concerned and the reputation of our dear state.
Let us work together, not against one another, in the shared interest of progress and development.
