Former Commissioner for Information and Communications (under Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON)
Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Aniekan Umanah is a distinguished Nigerian journalist, communication strategist, entrepreneur, and public administrator. He currently serves as the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Akwa Ibom State, under the leadership of Governor Pastor Umo Eno.
Early Life and Education
Born in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Umanah is the second of seven children of the late Elder John Umanah Equo.
He began his education at Bishop Clark’s Primary School, attended Holy Family College, Oku Abak, and completed his secondary education at Lutheran High School, Obot Idim.
He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Political Communication from the University of Uyo and the University of Lagos, respectively. He furthered his studies at Cambridge University, United Kingdom, and the Lagos Business School.
In 2025, he capped his academic pursuit with the prestigious Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Leadership and Strategic Studies from the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
Professional and Public Service Career
Dr. Umanah began his professional journey in journalism during his National Youth Service year (1989) with Outlook Newspapers, Enugu. He later joined Newswatch Magazine, where he excelled in both editorial and advertising departments.
In 2004, he co-founded Millennium Choice Technologies Ltd., and later established Executive Options Media Ltd., where he served as Chief Executive Officer, gaining national recognition as a media and communication expert.
Commissioner for Information and Communications (2008–2015)
Dr. Umanah first served as Commissioner for Information and Communications under His Excellency, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON, then Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Between 2008 and 2015, he played a crucial role in effectively communicating the “Uncommon Transformation” agenda of the Akpabio administration to national and international audiences.
He modernized the state’s information structure, strengthened government–citizen relations, and set a new standard for strategic communication in governance.
Member, House of Representatives (2019–2023)
In 2019, Dr. Umanah was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives, representing the Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.
During his legislative tenure, he:
- Sponsored and co-sponsored motions and bills promoting media development, infrastructure, and youth empowerment.
- Served on strategic committees that influenced national policy on information, communications, and good governance.
- Facilitated numerous constituency projects focused on human capacity development and rural transformation.
Return to Executive Service (2024–Date)
In recognition of his experience, dedication, and communication prowess, Dr. Umanah was reappointed in 2024 by Governor Pastor Umo Eno as Honourable Commissioner for Information.
He continues to champion transparent governance, digital communication, and public engagement as tools for sustainable development in Akwa Ibom State.
