Senator (Dr.) Mrs. Akon Etim Eyakenyi, Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, is a woman whose life story reflects hard work, humility, and service. Born in Mbokpu Eyo Akan, Urue-Offong/Oruko LGA, and married into Oron LGA, she is the first female ever elected Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State. She is married to Elder Etim Eyakenyi and is a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

A thoroughbred educationist, she began her career as an auxiliary teacher before rising through the ranks to become Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education. She holds a PhD in Curriculum Studies from the University of Calabar, alongside a Teacher’s Grade II Certificate, NCE, B.Ed, and M.Ed — proof of her lifelong commitment to learning.

Her political career began in 1991 as Supervisor for Education, Youth, Sports and Culture in Oron. Since then, she has served as Board Member of the Akwa Ibom State Secondary Education Board, Commissioner for Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Technical Schools Board, Chairman of Akwa Ibom Polytechnic Governing Council, and Senator representing Akwa Ibom South (2019–2023). In every role, she has promoted education, women empowerment, poverty alleviation, and community development.

Distinguished Senator Eyakenyi is also a mentor, philanthropist, and peace builder. She has presented academic research, published works, and attended international conferences, reflecting her intellectual depth. Her numerous awards include the Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, recognition by AKISAN USA, and the Nigerian Peace Corps’ “Advocate of Peace” award.

Today, she stands tall as a mobiliser, role model, and loyal partner in governance under Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda. Her story — from classroom teacher to Deputy Governor — continues to inspire women, youths, and leaders across Nigeria.
