Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned a brutal pre-dawn attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, in Danko/Wasagu LGA, Kebbi State, which left one staff member dead and 25 students abducted.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku said he was “devastated” by the news, calling the incident “another grim reminder of the worsening insecurity in our nation.”
According to police officials, the gunmen struck around 4:00 a.m., armed with “sophisticated weapons.” The vice principal of the school, Malam Hassan Makuku, was shot dead in the attack, and security personnel also sustained injuries. The abducted students were taken from their dormitories to an unknown destination.
In response, a joint rescue operation involving police tactical units, the military, and local vigilante groups has been launched. The forces are combing nearby forests and possible escape routes for the kidnappers. Kebbi State’s Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, has affirmed his commitment to protecting citizens, asking the public to remain calm and support security efforts.
Atiku did not limit his condemnation to Kebbi alone. He also denounced the killing of an APC chieftain, Umar Moriki, and mass abductions in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara State, where entire families—including women and children—were reportedly kidnapped. He decried these acts as “barbarity” that have no place in a civilized society.
Highlighting the national scale of violence, Atiku referenced similar tragedies unfolding in Plateau, Benue, and other states. He noted that people are being forced to flee their homes, citing Shanono LGA in Kano State as an example of communities living in fear.
He called on the Federal Government to take urgent action:
- Review and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture
- Deploy sufficient security personnel to vulnerable communities
- Intensify intelligence-led operations
Atiku emphasized that “our citizens deserve protection, dignity, and peace—nothing less.”
