Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has clarified that the Executive Order on masquerade activities in the state is not a prohibition but a safety-driven restriction.
Speaking at the funeral service of the late Mrs. Rose Linus Okon at the State Cenotaph, Uyo, the Governor explained that the directive is intended to keep masquerades off public roads and highways, where their activities have posed threats to commuters and pedestrians.
“I have not banned masquerades in the State. I only banned their activities on the streets where they have become a threat to citizens,” Governor Eno stated. “They are free to practise their Ekpo religion within village squares or designated community spaces. What we will not allow is any activity that endangers lives or disrupts the free movement of our people. Anyone who violates this will face the law.”
Governor Eno stressed the importance of balancing freedom of worship with the safety and rights of residents, noting that peaceful coexistence requires mutual respect among all groups.
During the event, the Governor consoled the bereaved family, encouraging them to draw strength from the exemplary Christian life lived by the deceased, who he described as a woman committed to service to God and humanity.
In recognition of dedication and humility, Governor Eno announced the appointment of Pastor Joe Linus, first son of the late Mrs. Okon, as Senior Special Assistant on Religious Matters, effective January 2026. He charged him to work closely with the existing religious advisory team and provide spiritual support for the State through prayer.
The Governor attended the funeral in the company of Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, Secretary to the State Government Prince Enobong Uwah, members of the State Executive Council, political leaders, captains of industry, and other senior government officials.
