Lawyers Alert task legislators on violation of human rights in Nigeria .

Legislators in the country have been advised to make informed decisions regarding the violation of the right of Nigerians, across the different Geo political zones.

The Founder of Lawyers Alert, Rommy Mom made the disclosure at the one day meeting on introducing monitoring and documentation tool for petty offences by Lawyers Alert in Partnership with OSIWA in Abuja.

He emphasized the need for ending for ending all forms of marginalization and deprivation of the poor in the society.

“The poor need to be given a voice in the society, we need to fight for the poor, especially in terms of unlawful arrest. We believe that human right violation is not right. By standing in the gap for the deprived in the society, we are making the world to be a better place”.

Rommy explained that the new documentation tool for petty offences will aid in providing legal services to the deprived citizens, and will be launched in the first quarter in 2020.

 “The tool will capture violations and align them according to age and sex.

It will contain relevant information and data regarding petty offences. It will enable the citizen to make informed decision regarding their right”.

“Lawyers Alert is liaising with focal persons in the different Geo political zones, and we are making meaningful changes by providing empirical evidence to stakeholders and citizens on petty offences”.

In the same vein, he added that the new data to be disseminated in March is coming from a genuine source, and not an adulterated source.

“The documentation tool needs a large number of substance and sensitization, so that the citizen will know that it is coming from an authentic source, and authority.”

He further advised Nigerians to be conversant with the relevant laws and policies, and know when it applies to their right in the country.

“Often at times we rush at situations, without getting adequate information and data regarding critical issues in the society. We must stand for justice and equity, and ensure that the right of everyone is protected at all times”.

OSIWA Representative at the event said there is need to prioritize the issue of Human Right Advocacy in Nigeria.

He commended the Lawyers Alert team for the great strides in introducing the documentation tool for petty offences.

 “The initiative is committed to driving human right advocacy in the African region. We have been engaging in several projects, and we will continue to offer our support in ensuring that the voice of the voiceless is being heard”.

The Representative of the Nigerian Bar Association, appealed to all Nigerians to be familiar with petty offences, and know the lasting impact it has on the society.

“From a legal perspective, it is important that some of the offences should be reviewed and reformed to understand the present realities in the society. It will put faces to similar offences such as cheating, prostitution, hawking and the rest”
