The Honourable Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu said the commission
will commence its nationwide Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) from June 28th 2021.
He said the success of the exercise depends mostly on citizens awareness through voters education, and it will last for one year.
He disclosed this during the second quarterly consultation meeting with Journalist and senior INEC officials.
Prof Yakubu appealed to the media not to relent in their constant support to the commission.
According to him the expansion of voters access to polling units prepared the ground for the discharge of another important responsibility of the Commission, which is the registration of eligible Nigerians as voters.
“This is one of the immediate tasks before the commission.
We are introducing a portal to enable eligible Nigerian voters to commence registration as voters online, before completing the exercise physically at the designated centres Nationwide.”
He further noted that this is the first time a major exercise of this nature is handled partially, and is consistent with the commission’s commitment to continue to deepen the use of technology in the electoral process in Nigeria.
The Prof furthermore stated that the preparation for the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship election is scheduled for 6th of November 2021.
“The Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory will hold on the 12th of February 2022. The two major off-season Governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States will hold on the 18th of June 2022 and 16th of July 2021 respectively.
There will be new registrants, and requests for intra-state and inter-state transfers as well as the replacement of voters cards as provided by law”.
He charged Journalist not to relent in the good work they are doing.
” There is need for massive publicity so that citizens are familiar with their voting locations, ahead of all forthcoming elections due to the relocation of voting points to underserved areas as autonomous polling units.”
