A former Commissioner for Works in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ephraim Inyang has accused telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria of allegedly collaborating with unnamed individuals to sabotage members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, Mr. Inyang, who defected from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the APC in February 2024, alleged that MTN had configured the mobile phones of former YPP members now in the APC to play YPP-themed ringtones without their consent or the option to remove them.

“MTN has collaborated with some unscrupulous elements to blackmail us in APC, Just recently, MTN programmed all our phones to have YPP ringtone without the possibility of changing it, and all MTN staff are claiming ignorance,”he said.

He further criticised the company, saying “It is a shame to patronise your network”.

MTN Nigeria has not issued a public response to the allegation at the time of this report. However, the claim has sparked debate online, with some calling for a formal investigation and others questioning the technical feasibility of the accusation.
