Uyo — Chief Edet Isong, has condemned what he described as a false and misleading social media attack against the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Reacting to reports circulating online that the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly would, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, pass a law criminalising relationships with married men, Chief Isong stated categorically that the information is entirely false.
According to him, no such bill exists before the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. He further described as untrue the claim that the bill is sponsored by the Deputy Governor, stressing that Her Excellency, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, is not a member of the State House of Assembly and cannot sponsor a bill.
Chief Isong also faulted the use of the name “Akon Inyang” in the report, describing it as incorrect and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public. He added that the alleged punishments of 10 years’ imprisonment for women and a ₦2 million fine for men have no legal basis.
He described the entire narrative as cheap blackmail and an attempt to drag the name of a peaceful and respected public servant into unnecessary controversy.
Chief Isong warned against the growing spread of misinformation in the state, recalling that similar false claims had earlier circulated alleging that the Deputy Governor had resigned — a claim that later proved untrue.
He advised the public to disregard the falsehood and urged residents to always verify information from credible and official sources before sharing, warning that misinformation poses a threat to peace and responsible governance in Akwa Ibom State.
