Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday attended a meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition leaders in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Also present were former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai; former Minister of Digital Economy, Isa Pantami; ADC chairman and former Senate President, David Mark; as well as former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal.
In a post shared on X, Atiku said the gathering was aimed at challenging what he described as “oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land.”
The meeting marks a fresh move in the build-up to the 2027 general elections, coming after opposition politicians and ADC leaders agreed in July to adopt the party as a coalition platform.
Political observers say the convergence of heavyweight figures across party lines signals growing discontent with the ruling establishment and an attempt to forge a “third force” strong enough to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Prominent members of the coalition include Uche Secondus, former PDP national chairman; Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate; Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation; and Odigie Oyegun, former APC national chairman.
Analysts, however, caution that while the coalition presents a rare alignment of diverse political interests, sustaining unity beyond the common goal of dislodging incumbents has historically proven difficult in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
