Armed Forces and Security Half Marathon Championship Holds on Saturday


The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Half Marathon Championship has been scheduled to take place on Saturday, 16th June 2019.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, The Chairman, Central Organizing Committee, Commodore Nuhu Bala, noted that the competition which is the 3rd edition will solidify and foster the existing relationship between the Armed Forces, Security and Para-Military agencies.

“The aim and objectives of the exercise is to further cement the existing relationship between the Armed Forces and other security agencies through sport” He said.

“A total of 250 athletes including male and females drawn from the armed forces, security and Para-military agencies are set to compete for star prizes in the forth coming Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Half Marathon Championship”.

He then disclosed that the 21.5 kilometer race which will hold in Abuja will also include the participation of veteran officers who are expected to also cover a distance of 10 kilometers. While there are lots of mouth watery prizes to be won, the first overall winner will go home with a Toyota Yaris 2018 model, the first overall team, an IVM G5 SUV, and the best Veteran will get a Hyundai Elantra.

Commodore Bala, said that the marathon is not open to the general public, as it is a close up race, and necessary agencies involved in the organizing committee have made adequate arrangements to ensure a hitch free championship.

“Members of the Organizing Committee for the exercise are drawn from all the participating security agencies, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria including the representatives from the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Federal ministry of Sports and Youth development as well as FCT sports council”.

The security agencies taking part in the marathon are Army, Navy, Air force,  Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Police, Immigration, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC),  Prisons, Customs, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO),

The start point for the regular marathoners will begin at Public institute at Dei-dei along kubwa express way, while the veterans will begin at the Tipper garage along the same express way, and finish at the sport complex Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment where prizes and certificates will be presented to the participants by Chief of Defence Staff, General A.G Olonisakin.
