ActionAid Nigeria trains journalist on investigative reporting

Media practitioners have been advised to give clarity while reporting about public funds, such that the citizen can determine if the funds are being allocated to meet the public needs and provision.

Speaking at a capacity media training with members of Journalist against Poverty, organized by Action Aid Nigeria, and the SCRAP-C project in Lagos.

Mr Lekan Otufodunrin, of the Media Career Development Network urged journalist to find   connection between the issue being reported and the people.

He said   there is need to create meaningful impact in the society through proper engagement with people, by giving them accurate and timely information about public fund.

“Often at times we need to meet the people involved to explain the situation at hand to us. By this act we ae creating social impact through accurate reportage of issues. There is need to confront and ask relevant bodies when we are in doubt of the situation on ground”.

He urged journalist to be up to date in terms of data Journalism. Noting that it is essential to translate complex number into understandable graphics.

In the same vein, Mr Tunde Aremu emphasized that data is needed to deliver public services more accurately and effectively.

“It will also enable the citizen to fully understand the information that is being passed. As journalist we need killer fact to write stories.

Data equally enables the government to develop new and innovative services.”

Speaking further, Mr Charles Petu, Action Aid Nigeria, IT Coordinator encouraged media practioners to be conversant with digital technology and forensic, as it is critical in the media space.

“Members of JAP  need to embrace the use of digital technology so as to tell compelling stories that  will stand out in the nation.

The world we live in now is now a global village, there is need to be conversant with necessary skills in the digital world”.
