Nigerians have been advised to utilize the Freedom of Information Act in fishing out corrupt officials in the country.
Action Aid Nigeria, Ene Obi made the disclosure at the second Accountability Discourse Series in Abuja.
She charged Nigerians to always hold the leaders accountable, so as to ensure that all the component in the FOI act is strictly adhered to by all leaders, both at the state and the Federal level.
According to her, in fighting corruption in the society, all citizen should come together with one voice in moving the country forward.
“Corrupt officials should be taken to court and given the appropriate punishment. When you analyse the country, you will find out that we need positive change in the country”.
In the same vein, she noted that the several challenges faced by the different state Government can be tackled through the utilization of the FOI act.
Speaking further, Mr Lanre Arogundade, Director International Press Centre, said there is need to maintain accountability in Governance, as this is what will change the narrative of the country.
He noted that every citizen has the right to demand for the FOI Act, adding that it is however saddening that most agencies do not respond back to queries from the populace.
“In 2018 alone, only 70 agencies compiled to the response for the FOI act, the number is not commendable. Some agencies do not even respond to the request from the citizen”.
The Director also charged the different State Governors to domesticate the FOI act in their domain.
