From the radio microphone to government, international journalism, youth development and the energy industry, Aniekeme Finbarr has built a career around communication, leadership, service and impact.
By Newsday Newspaper
There are careers that are built around a single profession, and there are careers that evolve with the changing demands of society. Aniekeme Finbarr belongs to the second category.
A broadcaster, journalist, strategic communications professional, public servant, author, public speaker, business coach and youth-development advocate, Finbarr has spent years building a professional identity around one central instrument — communication.
His journey has taken him from radio broadcasting and journalism to government, digital communication, international journalism fellowship, entrepreneurship and, most recently, strategic communications in Nigeria’s energy industry.
For a man whose career began with the microphone, the journey has been remarkably expansive.
THE EARLY YEARS: DISCOVERING THE POWER OF COMMUNICATION
Finbarr’s entry into professional life was through broadcasting.
His early experience in radio and television gave him the opportunity to develop the skills that would later define his career — public speaking, storytelling, audience engagement, current affairs analysis and the ability to communicate complex issues in simple and relatable language.
He subsequently worked with the Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC) before moving to Abuja, where he took on responsibilities in programme management and presentation.
He later joined Love 105.9 FM, Abuja, where he worked as a Sports Editor and On-Air Personality.
Those formative years were important in shaping the communicator he would eventually become.
Radio demands confidence, preparation, spontaneity and an understanding of one’s audience. It was an environment in which Finbarr developed the ability to speak to people, understand their interests and hold their attention.
But broadcasting was only the beginning.
FROM BROADCASTING TO PUBLIC SERVICE
Finbarr’s professional journey soon expanded beyond the newsroom and studio.
He moved into government communication, serving as a media aide and later becoming part of the communication structure of the Akwa Ibom State Government.
During the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel, Finbarr served as Special Assistant on Media and subsequently as Special Assistant on New Media.
His years in government coincided with the rapid growth of social media as a major platform for political communication and citizen engagement.
This gave him the opportunity to operate at the intersection of traditional journalism, government communication and the emerging digital media environment.
His work involved communicating government policies, responding to public conversations and helping to project the administration’s activities across digital platforms.
His writings from the period also showed his ability to combine political communication with storytelling and commentary. Contemporary reports identified him as a prominent new-media aide to Governor Emmanuel.
THE DIGITAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGIST
The transition from traditional media to digital communication was perhaps one of the most important stages of Finbarr’s career.
At a time when social media was changing how governments, politicians, businesses and citizens communicated, he embraced the new environment.
His experience demonstrated an understanding that communication was no longer restricted to newspapers, radio and television.
Facebook, Twitter and other digital platforms had become important tools for public engagement.
Finbarr became part of a generation of Nigerian communication professionals who recognised this transformation early and developed the capacity to work within it.
That experience would later prove invaluable in his career as a strategic communications professional.
A NEW CHAPTER UNDER GOVERNOR UMO ENO
The arrival of Governor Umo Eno opened another chapter in Finbarr’s public-service journey.
He served as Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Reorientation, focusing on communication, social engagement and issues relating to the development and orientation of citizens.
In publicly acknowledging his 2024 international recognition, Finbarr himself credited Governor Umo Eno for giving him the platform to serve as Special Assistant on Social Orientation, while also acknowledging former Governor Udom Emmanuel for the opportunity to serve as Special Assistant on New Media.
This transition was significant because it showed that his professional identity was no longer limited to media publicity.
He was increasingly involved in communication as a tool for social development and behavioural change.
THE INTERNATIONAL BREAKTHROUGH
One of the most defining achievements in Finbarr’s career came in 2023, when he participated in the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Fellowship under the United States Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.
The fellowship gave him an opportunity to interact with some of the leading institutions and professionals in journalism and media in the United States.
His professional study programme included institutions such as the City University of New York, International Center for Journalists, Pew Research Center, Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Poynter Institute and University of Colorado, Boulder. He also undertook study visits to media organisations including Voice of America and other broadcast and journalism institutions.
For a Nigerian journalist and communications professional, the fellowship represented an important international milestone.
More importantly, it exposed him to different approaches to journalism, media ethics, digital transformation, newsroom management and the changing relationship between journalists and audiences.
FROM BENEFICIARY TO CHANGE AGENT
Perhaps what makes Finbarr’s international experience more significant is what he did with it afterwards.
In 2024, he was selected as one of the recipients of the Global IVLP Impact Award.
The recognition was given to 120 U.S. exchange alumni from 101 countries for efforts to create positive change in their communities.
Finbarr used the opportunity to launch the “Next Generation Journalists” project.
The initiative was designed to equip young journalism graduates with skills required for the modern media environment, including digital journalism, artificial intelligence, content creation, analytics and ethical reporting.
According to his account of the project, 60 fresh journalism graduates benefited from the initiative.
This aspect of his career is particularly noteworthy.
Rather than seeing international exposure simply as a personal achievement, he converted the opportunity into a platform for transferring knowledge.
That is perhaps one of the strongest indicators of his philosophy: achievement becomes more meaningful when it creates opportunities for others.
THE AUTHOR AND MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER
Beyond journalism and government, Finbarr has also established himself as a motivational speaker and author.
He has spoken extensively on personal development, leadership, entrepreneurship, career development and the importance of discovering one’s abilities.
His motivational work includes the “Aim for Greatness” programme, while his published works include Dare It, Do It and This Is Your Moment, according to published biographical profiles.
His message is particularly directed at young people.
He encourages them to move beyond excuses, identify their talents, acquire relevant skills and take deliberate steps towards achieving their goals.
His philosophy is simple: circumstances may influence a person’s beginning, but determination, preparation and action can influence the destination.
A BUSINESSMAN AND CONSULTANT
Finbarr’s interests have also extended into entrepreneurship.
He is identified professionally as the Managing Director of Finbarr Consults Limited, where he has worked in business coaching, strategic communication, business development and professional development.
His profile with Activate the Youth describes him as a business coach with an interest in helping entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized businesses achieve sustainable growth.
This aspect of his career complements his media background.
Modern businesses require more than good products. They require strong communication, effective branding, stakeholder engagement and the ability to build trust.
Finbarr’s experience across journalism, government and public relations places him in a position to understand these different dimensions.
AN ADVOCATE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
One recurring theme throughout Finbarr’s career is his interest in young people.
Whether through motivational speaking, journalism training, business coaching or professional mentorship, he has consistently advocated personal development and capacity building.
His participation as a speaker at youth-focused programmes further reflects this interest. Activate the Youth identifies him as a business coach and Managing Director of Finbarr Consults Limited, with a stated focus on youth empowerment and enterprise.
For Finbarr, youth empowerment is not merely about financial assistance.
It is also about knowledge.
It is about helping young people understand that education, skills, discipline, networking and innovation are assets that can determine their future.
A LIFELONG LEARNER
Another remarkable feature of Finbarr’s professional journey is his commitment to continuous learning.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts from the University of Uyo. His professional profile also records further training in journalism, communication and related fields.
His international fellowship added another dimension to his professional development.
Rather than considering professional success the end of education, he has continued to update his knowledge in response to changes in communication, technology and business.
That attitude is particularly important in the age of artificial intelligence, social media and rapidly evolving digital communication.
THE ENERGY SECTOR: A NEW PROFESSIONAL FRONTIER
In January 2026, Finbarr entered another significant phase of his career.
Sumedha Energy Limited, a joint venture involving Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited and NNPC Exploration and Production Limited, appointed him Media Manager for its Akwa Ibom State operations.
In that capacity, he also oversees communications and media relations for supporting subsidiaries involved in infrastructure and service provision for upstream operations around OML 13.
The appointment represents a natural progression of his career.
After years of working in journalism, government communication and strategic communications, he moved into an industry where communication, stakeholder engagement and community relations are particularly critical.
The energy industry involves multiple stakeholders — government, host communities, traditional institutions, regulators, businesses, workers and the media.
Finbarr’s experience provides him with an understanding of how these different interests interact.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND THE OIL INDUSTRY
Since taking up his new role, Finbarr has become a visible voice in communicating the activities of Sumedha Energy and its partners in Akwa Ibom.
His work has included communicating issues surrounding host communities, development programmes, employment, infrastructure and stakeholder engagement.
In July 2026, he was quoted in reports concerning the unveiling of a needs-assessment report for communities within the OML 13 Host Communities Development Trust.
In April 2026, he also represented Sumedha Energy and Ibom Developers at an event where the organisations were recognised for contributions to job creation and community development in Akwa Ibom. Reports quoted him as saying the organisations had contributed to the creation of more than 7,000 direct and indirect jobs and supported initiatives in education, healthcare, infrastructure and economic empowerment.
His current assignment therefore places him in a position where his communication expertise is directly connected to community development and corporate stakeholder relations.
THE PROFESSIONAL WHO KEEPS EVOLVING
Looking at Finbarr’s career as a whole, one word stands out: versatility.
He has been a broadcaster.
A sports editor.
An On-Air Personality.
A journalist.
A newspaper columnist.
A government media aide.
A new-media strategist.
A social-reorientation advocate.
A public speaker.
An author.
A business coach.
A strategic communications consultant.
An international journalism fellow.
And now a corporate communications manager in the energy industry.
Yet these roles are not disconnected.
They are chapters of the same story.
At the centre of all of them is communication.
THE PERSONALITY BEHIND THE PROFESSIONAL
Beyond the appointments, awards and professional achievements is a personality characterised by confidence, ambition, curiosity and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
Finbarr appears to understand that professional relevance is not achieved by remaining comfortable.
His career demonstrates a willingness to move into unfamiliar territory, learn new skills and reinvent himself.
From radio broadcasting to digital communication; from government to international journalism; from motivational speaking to business consultancy; and from public service to the energy sector, each transition has expanded his professional portfolio.
A PRODUCT OF AKWA IBOM
For Akwa Ibom, Finbarr represents a generation of professionals whose careers have moved beyond the traditional boundaries of the state.
His international exposure has taken him to major journalism institutions in the United States, but much of his work continues to have a direct connection with Akwa Ibom.
His current corporate assignment is also firmly rooted in the state’s energy and host-community environment.
In that sense, his story demonstrates how a professional from the state can acquire global exposure and bring that experience back into local institutions and communities.
THE ROAD AHEAD
At this point in his career, it would be premature to describe Finbarr’s journey as complete.
If anything, his career suggests that another chapter is already unfolding.
The communications industry is changing rapidly.
Artificial intelligence is transforming journalism.
Social media continues to redefine public relations.
Businesses increasingly require sophisticated stakeholder engagement.
And communities are demanding greater transparency and participation in development.
These developments create an environment in which professionals with Finbarr’s combination of media, government, digital and corporate experience are likely to remain relevant.
CONCLUSION
The story of Aniekeme Finbarr is ultimately more than the story of a journalist who became a government aide or a communications professional who moved into the energy sector.
It is a story of reinvention, continuous learning and service.
His journey from broadcasting to strategic communication, from government to international journalism, from youth mentorship to corporate affairs, demonstrates what is possible when talent is combined with preparation and the willingness to evolve.
His international recognition through the Edward R. Murrow Fellowship and the Global IVLP Impact Award provides evidence of professional accomplishment. His journalism-training initiative demonstrates a commitment to transferring knowledge. His work in government shows experience in public communication, while his current role in the energy sector places him at the heart of stakeholder engagement and community relations in one of Nigeria’s most important industries.
But perhaps the most enduring description of Aniekeme Finbarr is simply this:
He is a communicator who believes that communication should create impact.
The microphone may have changed.
The platforms may have changed.
The responsibilities may have become bigger.
But the central thread running through his career remains the same — to communicate, to inspire, to build capacity and to make a difference.
And for a professional whose journey continues to evolve, the most interesting chapter of the Aniekeme Finbarr story may yet be ahead.
