Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the payment of weigh-in allowance to journalists in the state’s employment who were previously omitted from the scheme, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of media professionals and sustained collaboration with the press.
The Governor announced the approval on Monday during a courtesy visit by the newly elected leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, at Government House, Uyo.
Governor Eno directed the Head of Civil Service to ensure the immediate implementation of the approval, noting that since some journalists were already benefiting from the allowance, it was only fair and equitable to extend the same privilege to others who had been left out.
He particularly acknowledged the dedication of journalists serving in the Government House Press Corps, observing that they often work beyond normal official hours and deserve appropriate welfare incentives in recognition of their commitment.
Reiterating his administration’s people-centred philosophy, Governor Eno assured that the welfare of workers and citizens would remain a priority as his government continues to implement its ARISE Agenda.
According to him, the developmental strides being witnessed across the state are the product of deliberate planning, disciplined execution, and purposeful leadership rather than mere expectations.
“Our development is built on one achievement after another. Sustainable progress requires intentional leadership and consistent effort,” the Governor said.
He cited several milestones recorded by his administration, including the arrival of the first batch of 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses aimed at improving public transportation and reducing commuting costs for residents.
Congratulating the newly elected NUJ leadership on its successful election, Governor Eno commended the union for its continued partnership with government in promoting peace, development, and responsible journalism. He urged journalists to sustain their support in projecting the state’s achievements as the administration intensifies efforts to position Akwa Ibom as a leading tourism destination in Nigeria.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, said the visit was to formally present the union’s new leadership to the Governor and express appreciation for his unwavering support to the media since assuming office.
He described Governor Eno as one of Nigeria’s most media-friendly governors, citing several interventions that have strengthened the journalism profession in the state.
Among these, he listed the completion of the long-abandoned Patience Umo Eno Hall at the NUJ Press Centre, a project that had remained unfinished for over 18 years, the presentation of brand-new vehicles to the immediate past leadership of the union, and the appointment of journalists into key positions within the state government.
Comrade John also assured the Governor that the union would continue its campaign against quackery and fake news while remaining a dependable partner in promoting good governance and the development of Akwa Ibom State.
