Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Tuesday undertook an on-site inspection of the popular Ibom Plaza in Uyo, marking the official commencement of its long-anticipated renovation.

The renovation project is designed to restore the plaza’s status as a premier recreational hub for residents and visitors, reflecting the administration’s commitment to revitalizing public infrastructure and promoting a more vibrant urban experience.

Governor Eno, accompanied by key members of the State Executive Council, was received at the site by the Chairman of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA), Hon. Anietie Eka.

The visit is in line with the Governor’s ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes sustainable tourism, urban renewal, and economic diversification beyond oil. During the tour of the expansive 35-hectare facility, the Governor assessed ongoing preparatory works ahead of full-scale renovation activities.

The project, according to government officials, will focus on upgrading recreational amenities, repairing long-dormant fountains, improving landscaping, and installing energy-efficient solar-powered lighting systems to enhance both aesthetics and safety.

“Ibom Plaza is more than just a landmark; it is the heartbeat of Akwa Ibom — a place where families gather, young people unwind, and tourists experience the warmth of our state,” Governor Eno said.

“We’ve sealed off certain sections temporarily not out of neglect, but to deliver excellence. By next quarter, this space will shine brighter, drawing even more people to celebrate our shared heritage.”

Local residents commended Governor Eno for his unwavering commitment to the continuation of key infrastructural projects across the state. They noted that the renovation will significantly improve Uyo’s aesthetics and restore the iconic plaza as a symbol of civic pride.

“I will miss the old plaza, but I am very happy to anticipate the new one. I know our Governor is a man of truth, and I expect nothing less,” Mrs. Otobong Udoh said in an interview.
