The Super Eagles of Nigeria moved a step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dominant display at home. The team defeated the Benin Republic national football team 4-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo to secure their place among Africa’s four best runners-up and earn a spot in the next phase of qualification.

The star of the evening was Victor Osimhen, who netted an early opening goal and completed a hat-trick to fire the Super Eagles to victory. He broke the deadlock within three minutes, followed by a second goal just before half-time, and sealed his treble early in the second half. The final goal came courtesy of substitute Frank Onyeka in stoppage time.

Despite needing a win to guarantee a play-off place, Nigeria arranged their affairs efficiently. Victory now gives them the confidence going into the next stage of the qualifiers, although the direct qualification spot remains out of reach after South Africa national football team’s success in the group.

Coach Eric Chelle and his charges will now prepare for the play-off round with renewed momentum, backed by the fans in Uyo who witnessed a commanding performance and a night to remember for Nigerian football.

    Match Highlights:

    • Nigeria surged ahead in the 3rd minute as Osimhen finished a through-pass to open the scoring.
    • He doubled the lead around the 37th minute with a header from a well-placed cross.
    • The striker completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute to all but seal the result.
    • Onyeka’s goal in injury time made it 4-0 and confirmed Nigeria’s place in the play-offs.

With this victory, the Super Eagles showed the attacking power and composure they will need as they aim to return to the World Cup stage. The next challenge is to maintain this form and capitalise on the opportunity ahead.
