A respected political leader and community elder from Akwa Ibom State, Chief Edet Isong, has condemned the recent remarks made by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Adetokunbo Pearse, describing Senate President Godswill Akpabio as a criminal and unfit to lead the Senate.
Chief Isong, in a statement issued to journalists, described Pearse’s comment as highly irresponsible and disrespectful to constituted authority. He noted that the Senate President occupies the third-highest office in Nigeria, and as such, deserves due respect irrespective of political affiliations or personal sentiments.
According to Chief Isong, branding such a high-ranking public officer a criminal without legal proof is reckless and damaging to the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“It is very unfortunate for a man of Pearse’s standing to make such a baseless and demeaning statement about the Senate President. This shows a lack of respect for the rule of law and the office he holds,” Chief Isong said.
Chief Isong also highlighted some of Senator Akpabio’s notable achievements, both as a public servant and as the current Senate President. He recalled that as Governor of Akwa Ibom State (2007–2015), Akpabio transformed the state through massive infrastructural development — constructing modern roads, bridges, hospitals, and educational facilities — and initiating the Free and Compulsory Education Policy that benefited thousands of children across the state.
As Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Akpabio was credited with reviving key Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) projects, promoting transparency, and restoring confidence in the commission’s operations.
Since assuming office as President of the 10th Senate, Chief Isong noted that Akpabio has demonstrated effective leadership and legislative foresight, fostering cooperation between the executive and legislative arms, and supporting laws that enhance investment, job creation, and national security.
He further advised Pearse to exercise caution and responsibility in his public utterances, adding that politics should not be a platform for personal attacks or unfounded allegations.
Chief Isong reaffirmed his confidence in the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, describing him as a visionary leader, seasoned administrator, and patriotic Nigerian committed to national development, unity, and the welfare of all citizens.
