RE: NYSC SITS ON N23.5 MILLION DONATION TO CRITICALLY INJURED EX-CORPS MEMBERS

The attention of the NYSC Management has been drawn to a story with above headline published in the Vanguard ‎Online on Sunday, 17th January, 2016 suggesting that monies donated to the NYSC Hope Alive beneficiaries during the last President’s NYSC Honours Award ceremony ‎have been withheld from the beneficiaries.

We wish to stress that the Hope Alive Initiative was introduced by the NYSC Scheme as a platform for appreciating the sacrifices of ex-Corps members who suffer permanent disability during the service year and to provide succour to them, especially in aid of their post-service economic survival.

Contrary to the suggestion in the Vanguard publication, the same Scheme, which made this initiative on humanitarian grounds, would not have contradicted itself by frustrating the supposed beneficiaries.

Management wishes to inform the general public that of all the financial pledges made to the ex-Corps members, only the one made by the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State Senator Godswill Akpabio has so far been fulfilled and the sum of N5m (Five million naira) donated by him has since been shared to the beneficiaries.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Scheme is still awaiting the fulfillment of pledges made by two corporate bodies, Heritage Bank and Ibeto Group both totaling N18.5m (Eighteen million five hundred thousand naira).‎

Much as the Scheme does not have control over these corporate bodies, we will continue to follow up based on our confidence that, as responsible organizations, they will redeem the pledges.

Management wishes to assure the affected beneficiaries that their entitlements will be delivered to them as soon as the donor organizations redeem their pledges.

Furthermore, the public may wish to know that as a Government agency, the NYSC had followed the appropriate procedures to secure fulfillment of the Federal Government’s pledge of automatic employment for the Hope Alive beneficiaries and the President’s Honours Award winners.

Consequently, all the beneficiaries were handed their letters of employment at a brief ceremony held recently at the Federal Civil Service Commission, Abuja.

Management remains committed to the success of the Hope Alive Initiative, and we assure our current and prospective partners in the project and indeed the general public of our commitment to ensuring honesty and transparency in handling the project.
