Center for democracy and development CDD, has warned Nigerians against consequences of fake news which is currently alarming.
Senior Program officer of the oganisation Austin Aigbe, issued the warning at the end of training session on Countering Misinformation and Disinformation in Kano State.
The event was organized by CDD, with support from The National Endowment for Democracy NED.
he said the center embarked on massive training of fact-chekers in the country.
Austin added that the level of fake news and disinformation is fast increasing, hence the need to prevent the circulation of fake news.
” Disinformation has become more necessary, and presently, the country’s political landscape is tense, given the increasing insecurity threats, pervading different parts of the country amidst perceived marginalization, anger, confusion and economic challenges.”
He also pointed that there is a tendency that political actors can willingly take advantage of the gaps either to misinform, and promote apathy or skew people’s beliefs.
