Nigeria is close to eradicating Polio- Dr Shuaib

The Executive Director of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Dr Faisal Shuaib, said the country is close to eradicating Polio from 2016 till date, as it has not recorded 10% increase coverage of immunization for over two years.
The Executive Director made the disclosure at the Expert Review Committe on polio and Routine immunization (ERC) in Abuja.
According to him, the Federal government is putting concrete measures in place to ensure vaccine are made available in remotes areas.
“There has been strong survelliance and track records over Polio in the past 25 months . It shows that Nigeria is not missing out in given full dose of polio routine to children.
In the same vein, he urged Parents and Caregivers to bring out their children during immunization exercise.
“We want them to liaise with health care workers, by not denying the children who are within the vaccination age. It is essential for the children to take the right proportions of the vaccine”
He further charged stakeholders in the health sector to strenghthen routine immunization in the country.
The WHO Country Representative, Wondi Alemu noted that available data is showing that there has been tremendous reduction in the number of Polio cases.
Speaking further, he advised Parents and guardians not to relent in giving their wards routine immunisation.
“We will not repent in expanding our routine immunisation in the country.
Attaining and sustaining high immunisation coverage is the foundation for measles elimination and other accelerated disease control initiatives”
