MARITIME ACADEMY OR MARITIME UNIVERSITY:ORO’S UNEQUIVOCAL STAND

Some months ago,Rotimi Amaechi,Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, set up a committee comprising experienced stakeholders in the maritime sector to visit the Maritime Academy in Oron.It was headed by Adebayo Sarumi.Their mandate was apparently to convince both the host community and the school management that a restructured Academy would serve the country better than a university.
A few issues roused our curiosity in our engagement with the committee.
1 Amaechi had initially presented himself as a defender of MAN,what informed his about face? After raising our hopes, why were we not taken into confidence about a new thinking?
2 Why was it necessary to push through the restructuring agenda when the National Assembly had almost tidied up the bill on upgrading?
3 Why was Akinsoji,a man who ran MAN to the ground as Rector and was recalled in controversy and ignominy,a member of the committee?
4 Why did the committee accuse Oro of forestalling the growth of MAN for over 40 years while the community donated more land for expansion and kept the peace? All Rectors were appointed by Abuja and contracts were mainly awarded and executed by Abuja.Yet the committee threatened to relocate the school to Badagri.
No measure of threat or blackmail will change the stand of Oro!WE REJECT ANY INTERIM MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AND ACTING RECTOR.WE DEMAND UPGRADING OF MAN TO UNIVERSITY OF MARITIME STUDIES.MAN can remain a school within the said University because of its peculiar curriculum and sources of funding.
Oro has exercised the patience of a hunter.Patience,as we all know, has its elastic limits.INJUSTICE CAN MAKE ANGER BOIL OVER!
