INEC beefs up security against Anambra elections

The Honorable Chairman,  Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof Manhood Yakubu, said it  will firm up specific measures necessary to further guarantee the safety of all persons involved in the election, from the voters, election officials, observers, media Organizations and the security of election materials in Anambra State.
The  commission is also assuring the people of the state  that they are determined to proceed with the elections as scheduled.
“We have implemented two more activities on the timetable for the election in the next few days.
The voters register will be presented to political parties on the 7th of October 2021 and on the same  day we will  publish final list of candidates for the election.”
He added that the recent escalating threats to the election has led to the  emergency meeting by the commission to work with the security agencies and in consultation with respected opinions leaders in Anambra State.
 “We appreciate the enormous challenges that the security agencies are presently facing in Anambra State, which entails not only securing electoral process but also enforcing law and order generally.
Although this  is worrisome, because they have become prime targets of this mindless attacks”.
The Honorable Chairman further recalled that during the  last quarterly briefing held four weeks ago, a briefing on the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship election was received, and the major concern raised by members was on security of the state and the adjoining states in general .
“We were thinking about the election preparation and possible conduct of the election. Now the situation is even deteriorating and even innocent lives have  been  lost and properties as well. From the report gathered the goal of many of the attackers is that the Governorship election scheduled for 6th  of November 2021 must not hold”.
The NSA  although absent, stated that the ONSA is working assiduously with relevant security and intelligence agencies towards arresting the foregoing ugly trend and other associated security challenges in the South East zoneand beyond.
“We  increased collaboration between the Federal and South-East Governors towards addressing the underlying socioeconomic drivers of insecurity in the region.”
He further called on all peace loving Nigerians to join hands with constituted authority to promote peace and development across  the region and beyond.
