The Side By Side Movement for Gender Justice in Nigeria has call for total ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM),  an act mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers which violates the rights of girl and women with various health complications and even sometimes lead to death due to excessive bleeding.
The Co-Chairs, Side by Side Movement, Rev. Israel Akanji and Prof. Mustapha Isamil who made this known today in Abuja at the Commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance For Female Genital Mutilation said more than 200 million girls and women alive today have been mutilated in about 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where FGM is mostly concentrated.
Also, the Movement who said FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15 said FGM should be ban in Nigeria considering the harmful effect such as violation of the human rights of girls and women and immediate health complications such as Acute Infections, Bleeding of adjacent organs, Violent pain resulting in serious shock and later implications which include Vicious scars, Chronic infections, Hematic Complications and even death.
“ FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women, the procedure of FGM is degrading and cruel, thus, it should be banned in Nigeria”.
The Movement who strictly condemn all forms of gender injustice in Nigeria urged all religious and traditional leaders to make deliberate efforts to stop gender injustice in Nigeria including female genital mutilation.
They also pledge their support and collaboration with major stakeholders such as faith-based organization, Government, Media and Traditional Rulers to stop female genital mutilation.
