COMMENDING THE PRESIDENTIAL INTERROGATION OF IBRAHIM MAGU

BY SALIHU DANTATA MAHMUD

We would like to commend the AGF Alhaji Abubakar Malami SAN and the resulting actions of his Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari in the prompt dealing with Ibrahim Magu and the tainted EFCC.

We trust the publication of his arrest, questioning, and interrogation will give honest Nigerians the confidence to step up and be counted in the battle against corruption as part of the WAR AGAINST POVERTY.

POVERTY is a threat to the Nation that needs the power of the people to stand up and be counted with the Government to take the lead in a full assault against the Great driven corruption has destroyed the moral and ethical fiber of politics in the country and fed the demise of the economy leading to unacceptable levels of poverty.

Poverty in a Nation so blessed with human resources, and fertile land of abundance. Well done, and I trust the country will be fully behind you in your quest to unveil disgruntled and unpatriotic elements presently derailing the success against the fight against corruption. In view of the above, formidable civil society organizations, Youths Group, the diplomatic communities, and communicators are strongly in support of the listening ears of the Buhari government in the yearnings of Nigerians irrespective of tribe, class, and religion. Many Nigerians are hopeful, that, the coming on board of the chief of staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, is gathering positive impacts as regards expediting action on issues related to taking decisive against maladministration, corruption, favoritism, and nepotism. From infringement on the right of foreign nationals residents in Nigeria who were framed by their business partners to other sundry issues, Ibrahim Magu’s tenure has created a lot of bad image for the commission as things have been turned upside down in the anti-graft agency. From Nuhu Ribadu, Farida Waziri, Ibrahim Lamorde to Magu, the latter’s stewardship seems to be controversial. Initially commenced on a good note but derailed along the line.

As regards some Nigerians especially the Presidential Committee Against Corruption (PCAC) headed by Itse Sagay (Senior Advocate of Nigeria) who saw the arrest of the EFCC Boss as a Witch-hunting and intimidation forgot the era of the then EFCC Boss Nuhu Ribadu when a whole and powerful sitting Inspector General of Police in the person of Tafa Balogun was arrested. The arrest of Magu is therefore not an issue as no one is above the law except those bounded by immunity like the President and the Governors in achieving Mr. President’s Zero tolerance for corruption, the EFCC as one of the anti-graft agencies cannot be said to operate without blemish. Ibrahim Magu is a Commissioner of Police and at the same time chairman of the EFCC, which makes it interesting for the drama presently playing out. It is even an honor for the President and Commander in Chief to have given him preference and esteem-ness by making a retired President of the court of appeal known for his anti-corruption stance to chair the panel that interrogated and investigated him at the banquet hall of the Presidential villa. For history sake, Magu at the rank Chief Superintendent of Police was once detained on the orders of the former EFCC Boss Farida Waziri AIG Retired at the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (FCIID) area 10 when they had a disagreement so he is not new to the Place.

In conclusion, public affair analysts and – anti-corruption agents have been proven right by the steps taken by President Muhammadu Buhari. Whether Malami is right or not, as the supervisory minister charged with the responsibility of over sighting ICPC, EFCC, NHRC, NDLEA, and the Legal Aid Council, he has lived up to the expectation of Nigerians. Magu as a Police Officer and Malami as Lawyers are both friends in the same profession and direction as their professional callings are similar to each other. President Muhammadu Buhari must continue in other facets of his administration like an investigation of the poorly carried out distribution of palliatives, activities of the presidential committee on Covid – 19, and others that deserve his attention.
