Agency charged Abattoirs on Safety Measures to Curb Food Borne Diseases

 

 

 

 

 

 

The National Food Safety Management Committee (NFSMC)  has taken a safety assessment tour as part of  measures to curb food borne diseases to an abattoir in Karu, Abuja.

The Committee said it is essential to ensure good and hygienic food safety measures among Nigerian abattoirs.

The Chairman, National Food Safety Management Committee (NFSMC), Mr.Fubara Chukwu at the inspection tour said that is important to conduct such exercise so as to ensure Nigerians consume quality meat that will not hamper their health.

“When the meat which are being killed and prepared in the abattoirs is not properly processed, it can increase the spread of food borne disease. “He added.

Speaking on the World Food Safety Day, Mr Fubara said it is significant not just being the first of its kind but to also create global world awareness on Food safety which is everyone’s business.

The Chief Executive Officer, Funta Services Nigeria Limited, Mr J.F Tehinshe stated that food safety measures are very important especially in the preparation of meats.

“The Tuberculosis in meat and other food borne diseases like liver cancer, immune suppression and stunting in children is on the increase due to little or no practice of food safety measures, The process   involved in the slaughtering of sick animals, means of transportation of the meats and the preparation of hides and skin with tyres are disastrous to human health”.

Furthermore, Mr. Tehinshe appealed to butchers, operators of abattoirs, and veterinary doctors to ensure that they practice food safety at all times, so as to curb the rate of food borne diseases in the country.

The Assistant Manager, Karu Abattoir, Mr. Joseph Fyenu disclosed that security, and illiteracy level of the butchers are some of the challenges being faced by the abattoir.
