2019 Elections : Concerns mount over women’s participation

As the 2019 Elections is fast approaching, several group has called for the inclusion of more women in political position.
The UN Women Representative in Nigeria, Comfort Lamptey noted that Nigeria has the lowest representation of women in Africa.
She disclosed that when women are fully empowered , they will be able to participate in democratic process
While speaking at the inauguration of the task team by Interparty Advisory Council IPAC in Abuja.
She reaffirmed the UN Women’s commitment towards empowerment and advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
“The Nigeria situation is a course for concern as Nigeria stands as the country with the lowest number of women in politics on the African continent.
Globally when women participate in democratic process, it enhances the leadership and development position.”
The UN Women representative stressed the need for women to take part in the electioneering process as the 2019 election is approaching.
Lamptey noted that the UN Women is supporting Inter party Advisory Council (IPAC) to launch the task team in order to monitor the implementation of women charter of demands by political parties.
The Chairman of IPAC, High Chief Peter Ameh said there is need to promote women physical participation at all levels in the country.
He explained that women should leverage on the multitasking skills to partake in politics.
“We need to support women’s participation in order to reduce poverty. We should give them the necessary support that will make them to be the best.
We should not relent in the campaign to reduce harmful stereotype
Women are quite gifted in the area of governance and leadership, and should leverage on the potential”
He advised all the members of the task team to give their best in enhancing women’s participation in politics in Nigeria.
“We must carry women along in order for the nation to progress positively. We must at all time continue to advance the increased participation of women in public affairs .
The campaign to encourage other women’s participation should be ongoing ”
The country director of CDD, Idayat Hassan who was represented by Aigbe Austin ,disclosed that the issue of women’s participation in politics should be at the forefront burner in Nigeria.
He further charged all Nigerians not to be distracted but come together to support women in politics .
“This is a noble idea that must be supported by all Nigerians. We can not undermine
the potential of women at the detriment of patriarchal movement .
The quest for women participation must be at the highest level. We need to push the conversation further in all ramifications.”
